Heart Centered Healing

Why is it that some healers are more effective than others? I think it has to do with how much heart a person puts into it.

Often times when a person goes to a healer, what is happening is that they can sense the open hearted attitude of the healer and simply being in their energy field begins the healing process.

The person asking for the healing can tell when the healer is really compassionate, and that begins to open them to receiving the healing energy before the healer touches them or does anything else.

The beautiful thing about reiki healing energy is that it really comes through the heart, rather than being mechanical. The reiki healer does not need to know which muscle connects to which tendon. Different kinds of healers, like massage therapists can address pain and healing in that way.

So when the reiki healer is bringing through healing energy for the person who is asking for it, it is the openness of the heart that really amplifies the flow.

And from the perspective of the person seeking healing, opening the heart can be a very big step. For some people, healing the heart is one of the things that they need even though they may be asking for it to relieve stress or alleviate some body pain. For some people, opening the heart is easier than for others. Some are reluctant to open the heart because they feel that they want to keep it closed to protect it.

Opening it is necessary to let healing energy come in. Since the heart is in the middle of the body, in the center between the three upper and three lower chakras, and so once the compassionate, loving heart energy of the healer helps to fill the heart of the person seeking healing to overflowing, their heart will pump that healing energy to whatever part of the body, mind, spirit or emotions it need to go to.

If one person opens their heart to be receptive and the other opens their heart to help facilitate the flow, the circuit is complete like the two polarities on the battery of the engine that powers your car.

In heart centered healing, love becomes magic as the two hearts help bring healing in ways that are at the same time intangible, yet readily felt.

If you have never experienced this, and you would like to, I will be happy to share this with you.

Healing is sometimes about things we ingest and things that other people do to us. Healing energy can be very subtle and very strong. We can increase the flow of it by simply breathing it in. So in a way, we are ingesting something and someone may be said to be doing something to us, but that something is with our agreement and at our request.

Heart centered healing is not exactly the same for every person. It works a little differently for each person.

Tarot Healing

Tarot readings can also be healing although people don't always connect those two things. As a Reiki Master, I also put healing energy into the readings I do for people. I affirm before every reading and every healing that I am here to help bring through something that will be useful for this person at this time.

So whether a person is shown in the reading various energies that are moving in their life, they can then identify problems that need to be addressed and opportunities that are present.

When a reading confirms things they already know, that reassurance brings a supportive energy.

Sometimes identifying something that they had been overlooking that had been at the root of the problem is healing because now they can turn their attention to what needs to be addressed. People often overlook those factors that are hidden in plain sight.

Looking ahead in a reading, there is a healing energy coming through to the person to support them as they make their choices. Energy to bless them as they go on their way. Energy that is for their healing, no matter what choices they make.

I also remind people that they can pull cards out of a deck and place them where they will see them to support them in their efforts. Simply choose the images that tell the story of your success, in whatever way you are seeking or defining. It is a positive reinforcement, and a person can draw healing energy from the images. Visuals are a tool for transmitting healing energy.

Energy flows where vision goes.

Powerful Placebos

Scientists have recently agreed that the placebo effect is real and powerful. For those of you who have not been waiting for scientific proof, another way to say this is that the mind is a powerful tool. Stimulation of the immune system and the release of hormones can be triggered by our thoughts and feelings.

Why else do you think that sometimes in double blind studies, people who got the placebo did just as well as those who got the "real" medicine?

I have always maintained that sometimes we do need drugs and surgery, but sometimes changing our mindset can heal a wound as well as solving a problem. Relief from pain, anxiety, depression and more can be stimulated by non-invasive techniques. Some of the simple things I have written about before, from music to art walks in nature to reiki to ritual can work wonders.

For many years, the placebo effect was referred to in a context that implied that it was all fake and that only a fool would be happy with a placebo. Interesting that the tables are turned now that scientists have researched and reached the conclusion that the placebo effect can be real.

I know that many people reading this are either healers of some sort or have called on healers for their services. The fact that people choose from this variety of alternative techniques without insurance reimbursement is testimony to their effectiveness.

Here's another point to consider. Sometimes being with a person who seems to really care how you are doing makes a difference. If you feel that the healer is genuine in their concern and their effort, you could start to feel better even before the treatment begins and when you continue with that person, your feelings continue to improve.

Another way of saying it? Love, in the humanitarian sense of compassion and kindness that comes through the healer, is itself part of the healing mechanism.

Example? If you have experienced reiki or another form of energy healing and had nothing more than a drink of water, you could come away feeling much better than you did before the session, yet when you analyze it, what was done? No medicine was ingested, not even a lotion rubbed on the body, nothing more than a simple laying on of hands while the energy flows, and yet, you feel better.

It is my experience that all of this type of healing, when a person is really engaged in the process, is heart energy that is moving and doing the healing work. Heart. This might perfectly fit the definition of placebo.

When a person is going through a significant life change, especially a really trying time, a ritual can also serve as a placebo. The mere fact that you and a facilitator take time out from your daily routine in order to focus on the negative energy and shift it, can lift your spirits and help you creatively embrace and transform the changes in your life. Another placebo to the rescue!

The other joy and beauty that provide a practical aspect: placebos are usually very affordable healing sessions. Whatever it takes to feel better is very much within your reach.

Tarot Healing

How can a tarot reading be healing? I know this is a different thought for a lot of people, since many people think of card readings as simply fortune telling.

One. Notice how the reading will often indicate something that the querant needs to do before changes can take place that will stimulate the flow of healing energies. If a person takes these suggestions to heart, the reading forms a blueprint for action.

Two. Before I do any reading, I always affirm that I will work with my spirit guides to bring through something that will be useful for this person at this time.

Three, as a Reiki Master, I move the energy through the reading, using the card images as a vehicle to direct the healing energy to the area of their life where they need it.

In my readings, I am not only looking at the energies approaching and the energies at work, but also the energies the person can embrace and activate to open the way for beneficial results.

When we utilize the magnificent capabilities of the imagery built into the tarot decks by the designers, it becomes a powerful tool for self teaching and self healing, reaching far beyond the original parameters of game playing and fortune telling.

If you would like to experience this, I will be happy to show you how it works.

The more I see of the beautiful new decks that so many innovative, creative people are making, it is obvious to me that there is more power and potential to be tapped into as we make the best use of our tools. The creators of many decks have put a lot of intentional thought and energy into creating more than just pretty pictures. These are personal art galleries that double as life tools.

Worth exploring, don't you think? Feel the energy when you pick a card?

Creative Evolution

This morning, I read an article about Sting performing a winter Concert in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. The photo showed a bearded man dressed in 19th century clothes accompanied by Northumbrian pipes, mandolin and other acoustic instruments. His choice of songs was drawn from European early music and old English composers such as Purcell, Southwell, Warlock and Schubert. They say that he even sang in a lower range than is usual for him. All in all, a far cry from the musician who became famous for his performances with the band the Police. Reading the review made me wish I had been at that concert.

Creative people often evolve in unexpected ways. Author Walter Mosley initially became famous for writing detective novels set in Los Angeles in the 50s and 60s, then branched out to write science fiction. That's an unusual shift, and no doubt there are fans of his detective novels who didn't follow him very far into science fiction. Then again, he picked up other new fans because he did. And, of course, some fans like all of his work. Just like some of the people who enjoyed the music of the Police in years gone by might now be savoring the sounds of him performing in the context of an early music consort.

Many of us go through similar evolutions by following our creative instincts and pursuing work and projects for which we have passion and enthusiasm. In my own case, I am happy to just be a tarot reader, tarot teacher, a tarot dealer, a herbalist, gardener, past life facilitator and reiki healer. When people ask me if I would like to be a magazine editor again, I can honestly answer no. I successfully created and managed publications for years, but that was then. I have no desire to do it again. I am happy to be of service to people on a one-on-one basis. My life is simple in that manner of speaking and very fulfilling. I do have a busy schedule, but it all revolves around my reading schedule. It is an evolution.

I know that many of you are doing things right now that do not look like what you were doing a few years ago. That may puzzle some puzzle some people, but it is all part of our learning curve, our creative evolution.

Attaction Oil & Healing Salve, Handcrafted

Over the years, many people have asked me if they can get some of the oils that I wear. They ask where they can buy them, but I blend them myself and have done so for years. All are blends of essential oils combined with jojoba and other fine carrier oils. My oil is called Attraction, because it is created with the intention of attracting whatever it is you want into your life. It will add energy to your desires, dreams and intentions and help draw it to you.

The healing salve I make is also handcrafted. I grow the plants, harvest them, then blend the ingredients and make the salve. I have given a few people free samples over the years. They have all reported excellent results with it.

Now because of all the requests, it is finally time for me to bottle some of these and offer them for sale. Only limited quantities will be immediately available because I have only made one batch of salve from the plants I raised last year, and there will not be another batch until after the next growing season when I have more fresh herbs that I have grown.

My experience is that there is a difference in the properties of products that are
handcrafted with a lot of love. Some of my energy goes into every plant that I grow, and in the preparation, blending and bottling of the products.

The same even held true for healing herbal teas made from plants I grew. I had friends who found that the herbal teas prepared from plants I grew produced more healing results than the ones they bought elsewhere. I was not selling these. I was giving them away. So when I gave away all I had grown, they had no choice but to buy more until my next growing season. There is an energy exchange between people and plants.

Yes, I am a reiki master, and perhaps that is the energy that goes into everything I make. It can also be the personal energy of a person who is an attentive gardener who communicates with his plants and sees the connective energy in all things.

With the oil blends, the batches are not identical, but they are always good. This is due to the variance in availability of the oils I prefer to use at certain times prompts me to slightly alter the blend rather than wait for certain things to get back in stock. Variances are subtle and delicious. I regard the constant tweaking of the blends to be a pleasure, not a problem. Personal attention goes into every dram.

I also make spritzers for aromatic air and after shave. If you are interested in obtaining any of these, let me know.

Beyond the Subject at Hand

Tonight as I was teaching reiki, all of the wonderful aspects of it became clearer. Going over various points about the techniques and the ideas behind the techniques, many positive habits and useful concepts were reinforced. The elegance of reiki is in its simplicity, and that is also what makes it both powerful and accessible.

As with teachers of any skill, it is rewarding to see a student progress. It is pretty normal that when a person decides to take up a new study that they are tentative at first, and as their practice increases, so does their confidence level, and as that increases, so does their ability. In reiki, one of the traits of a healer is the heat in the hands from the energy traveling through them.

In teaching of a method such as this, it is also part of the continuation of the tradition that it is taught personally with hands on practice rather than just watching a video. A good teacher will also hold the vision that those they teach will also one day become teachers themselves.

Reiki also offers incentives for the student in that they can observe their own progress in a rather short period of time compared to other types of skills, and being aware of their own progression encourages a person to do even more. It is rewarding to the teacher to observe the student grow. It is a good feeling to pass on traditions to those who are dedicated to learning.

Good students encourage teachers to become even better teachers, and good teachers encourage students to become better not just in the subject at hand, but more as they use what they have learned in their life, beyond the specific applications at hand.

Enjoying Outdoor Festivals

Every day I get closer to my goal. Working outdoors today, trying to stay in the shade as much as possible. Met many new and interesting people, and had a great time.

Once again sudden rain and wind almost caused an upset of the day's events, but it calmed down and we resumed. Weather definitely presents a risk at outdoor festivals, yet it is a good way to meet people who would probably not ordinarily go a psychic fair or healing arts fair. In a public festival setting, it is a pleasure to meet people who are going for the experience of getting a reading for the very first time.

In these types of situations, it also happens that many times I read for family members or friends who are there together. What a great way to spend a day.

When people ask me why I work so hard and put in so many hours at all these events plus seeing private clients on weekday evenings, I can honestly say that I enjoy doing this much more than just kicking back with a drink and watching TV. I do enjoy having a drink and watching a movie, or reading a novel, or catching up with people online, but that is after the in person sessions have ended.

I always affirm that I will be of service to those who come to me, and that I will bring through something useful for them at this time. And that feeling stays with me after I am done. So I am going back to do it all again tomorrow. When you can do what you love, you are truly blessed.

Healing and the Mind's Eye

To send reiki healing energy to people over a distance, it is helpful to focus the energy by picturing the person you are sending it to. A photo can help, but even without a photo, if you just close your eyes and imagine that the healing energy is being sent to the other person.

You can hold your hands around the picture and imagine the energy flowing through your hands to the person you are intending it to reach.

Like anything else you want to do, you will get stronger at sending with practice. You can test this with other people and see if they are picking up on it. Ask them if they felt anything. Ask them if they are feeling anything now. You can practice by suggesting to them a certain time of day that you will be sending energy so that they can open themselves to receiving it. You can also send it without mentioning a specific time and see if they pick up on it.

Yes, there are techniques for amping up the flow of energy, and as I mentioned, practice strengthens the flow. Meanwhile you can try it. You have everything to gain and nothing to lose. You can also try it on your plants and animals. It is simple, gentle, beautiful, and it works.

How Does 1 + 1 = 3?

Now this may seem like a silly question to some, but there is a powerful principle involved. Look at a triangle. When two people put their energies together, it brings them to a point, the point of focus, which is the pinnacle of achievement. When two people combine their energies, they can create results that are more than either one of them could do alone.

Look at the Lovers card in a traditional tarot. Did you ever wonder what that symbol was between them? It is the symbol of the energy they create together. The energy of two people working together forms a third force that can do more than either one alone.

Look at the timeless mystery and power of the pyramids which are formed by a triangle on each side. Look at the power of the dome, which is formed by a network of triangles.

One person can do a lot, but when one person adds their strength together with that of another person, together they can do great things.

Consider the way reiki works as another example. When the person requesting the healing opens themselves up to receive it, and the person agreeing to facilitate the flow of energy opens themselves up, then the third force is the flow of the universal energy between them.

One plus one can do great things. Consider the brainstorming that two people can do. One person's ideas combined with another person's ideas can find a solution. One plus one produces great results.

A Light Touch for Heavy Lifting

The array of healing techniques that people use is as varied as your imagination. I have had many amazing experiences and seen other healers use techniques that I had doubts about when I first saw them, but later found them to be quite good.

Among the amazing, I would easily include John of God, the Brazilian healer who does psychic surgery. However, he also heals with a simple touch of the hand. There was another Brazilian healer, Mauricio Panisset, whose touch sent a jolt of electricity through me. I had a white light flash right on my third eye. The room itself would strobe when he was chanting and channeling energy.

The more subtle, but still amazing experiences would have to include my first experience of reiki. I was prompted to find out about reiki simply because I heard so many other people talking about it. So one day I decided to find someone to teach me. When I had my initiation into level one reiki, I felt very light, very spacey and definitely felt a flow of energy moving through me. It was a wonderful introduction to reiki and the difference I felt was very strong and clear. I felt like I was floating, yet there was nothing in my previous experience to explain it. The healer simply touched me lightly. Who would have thought that such a simple thing would have such a powerful effect?

Aromatherapy is another wonderful technique. The application of tea tree or lavender to the skin can soothe and promote healing in very short order. Inhaling eucalyptus is a familiar scent that opens breathways. A bit of various scents inhaled can somehow stimulate the immune system. Who would have thought that smelling various scents whether in the air or applied with another material, like a lotion or oil, could stimulate the body's healing faculties?

We are used to buying over the counter medicines that pack a quick punch, yet when we look in our kitchen we find thyme and make a cup of tea with it, and our upper respiratory tract immediately feels some relief. We can make a cup of oregano tea to fight infections. Mint tea to soothe stomach or headaches, or comfrey compresses to help mend skin and bones. These beautiful, simple things work, all of them from the herb garden you can grow in containers just outside your door. Yet how many people recognize the potential of the things they simply think of as flavorings for certain foods?

Touches, scents, teas. We can add to this list, the sound of beautiful music soothing our souls. Perhaps it is not surprising that soft music can do such wonders for us. After all, who does not come out with a smile on their face after having a massage, and all of the massage therapists I have known have used music to help create a healing environment. There is another aspect too. Sometimes the simple vibration that instruments produce, as well as their sounds do the work of helping to release muscles, negative thoughts, toxic juices produced by emotional imbalances and stresses. Sounds simple, I know. Yet it works.

So many of these things are subtle. If we just relax and allow these subtle things to work, they are amazing. It does not always take a strong touch to do the heavy lifting.

Engaging with Our Essential Self

Have you ever felt the different kinds of connections between kinds of energy?

It feels natural and effortless to feel the Reiki energy moving, sort of like swimming and feeling the ebb and flow of the water. Sometimes I have to reaffirm that I am opening to my fullest potential. Then I feel the energy increase and pulse even stronger. When I work on people, it is easy to see their inner beauty, the radiant, sweet soul who is really there.

Their faces appear to transform and reveal themselves to me. I also sense a lot of that when I read for people, and so I think that these two abilities really compliment each other well. Openness to this seeing is something I want and welcome, although I am sure that there are some who are reluctant to open that much.

If we work in jobs that we allow us an opportunity to connect with others in spiritual way, we already are approaching this consciousness, because in order to do these kinds of jobs, we have to set aside some of the ordinary considerations of glamor and other superficial considerations to do what needs to be done for all kinds of people.

Some people are more open and develop this consciousness earlier, due to the nature of the work they do every day. I didn't develop a different perspective of consciousness until much later. There are kinds of working environments that open us to different levels of consciousness, and then when combined with a spiritual awareness, a closeness between people is possible in ways that bypass the superficial.

I always affirm that when I am doing healings or readings for people that I am in service to them and that with the assistance of my spirit guides I will bring through something that will be useful for them at this time. So if they are needing a perspective or fresh idea that allows them to make better use of information that comes to them, or the healing energy brings comfort to them physically, spiritually, mentally or emotionally, whatever they need at the moment, I feel the connection and they do too.

In either case, reading or healing, what we are doing is taking a look at a person in a way that connects to the essential self, rather than the superficial self. These different energy levels that we experience awaken us from the trance of every day life to reveal the other life we sense. It is this that we love to stay engaged with and prolong our exposure to, through readings and healings.

The Reiki Principles

Those of us know Reiki are familiar with the Reiki principles which serve as guides to a peaceful, harmonious, satisfying life. It is part of what we affirm in attuning our selves to the frame of mind we intend to be in for the effective practice of Reiki.

They are simple, and you can easily recognize their appeal and usefulness.

Just for today, I will not worry

Just for today, I will not anger

Just for today, I will earn my living honestly

Just for today, I will honor my parents, teachers and elders

Just for today, I will show gratitude for every living thing

You may find slight variations in the translations of the principles from different teachers, but the meaning remains intact. It has nowhere near the variations you can find, for example, in different translations of the Tao Te Ching.

As in other metaphysical teachings, the focus is on staying in the present, so that consciousness remains fixed on giving each thought, word and action its due.

Being an ordinary human, it is a challenge and a daily reminder to keep on a good track. As a healer, the flow of healing energy becomes more powerful when the healer is fully present and focused on facilitating the flow of energy and the client is fully open to receiving the energy.

Even if you are not a Reiki practitioner, see if the principles serve you well. There have been many days when they have been beneficial to me.

The Human Touch

One of the reasons that alternative healing is so popular is that we spend so much time at our jobs working with computers and telephones that we appreciate the pleasure of personal service. Finding a healer who will focus on our needs and offer their service to us is a welcome counterbalance to simply visiting websites or sending emails. Or finding a teacher who will take the time to share their knowledge with us personally rather than trying to learn from a book, a webinar, teleseminar or a huge group. The human touch is powerful and communicates volumes.

There is healing and wisdom that we gain from simply being in the presence of another concerned, committed individual. Certainly we have all felt the difference when we have gone to a professional for service and we feel like we have been just rushed out so that they can bring the next customer in.

And on the other hand, we know the the feeling of healing starting to work even before the official session begins when we can tell that the healer actually cares about us and is focused on really putting their energy into their service to us.

Training and experience are important, and they are contributing factors to the effectiveness of a healer. In the end, though, it is the human touch that propels, channels or directs the healing processes and stimulates the flow of intent focused on healing, whether the modality is very physical, mildly physical, or not very physical at all. The empathy, compassion and concern of the healer who works with us is part of the effectiveness.

People's attitudes play a part in all of our interactions. When someone is acting out of love, rather than out of fear, we can tell, and it makes us feel good. It also adds energy to the technique they employ to help do the healing work. Focus, intent, compassion, experience. The healing touch.

What is Reiki Like?

What is Reiki like? Picture yourself lying on a comfortable massage table. You don't have to discuss or analyze anything. You don't have to do anything. You just have to be open to receive the energy. Just relax and know that whatever is bothering you can be aided by the simple loving, kind, compassionate energy that lives all around us and animates the entire universe.

A warm, soothing energy flows through the other person's hands into you. It feels both calming and energizing at the same time. There is soothing music playing in the background. The energy gives you a sort of tingling sensation, which is pleasant and seems to make you more aware of everything around you.

It seems like you have been here a long time, but only an hour has gone by. Somehow a lot of the things you were stressing about when you came in are no longer distracting you from consciousness. In fact, solutions to problems may be coming to mind. Some of these solutions include simply being more patient with others, or radiating out a feeling of compassion toward them, rather than arguing with them. Reiki can encourage a person to let go of fear, anxiety and conflicted feelings in favor of projecting some of that love, kindness and compassion you are receiving out to other people.

Pains and discomforts may drift away as a result of a Reiki session. A feeling of love and clear thinking will be present long after the session has ended. A person can continue these feelings by following the energetic flow that they sense. Additional sessions can continue to renew these feelings. Fresh new perspectives will occur to you that will ease your comfort in your physical, mental, spiritual and emotional bodies.

Reiki, Love, Courage and Healing

Reiki comes through the heart, both the heart of the healer and the heart of the one seeking healing. A heart full of love is a heart full of courage and compassion. In order to be of service as a Reiki healer, a person must be willing to open their heart with compassion to be a conduit of healing energy that draws from the infinite source of the universe.

There is no judgment of the cause of the wound, nor is there an attempt to analyze or treat it scientifically. The healer opens their heart to the person requesting healing, who must also open their heart to receiving the healing energy on whatever level it is most needed, physical, spiritual, mental or emotional. For a person to want healing is to take courage, and a heart full of love is a heart full of courage. The French word for heart is "coeur" which is the root word for courage.

Heart centered healing opens to love, courage and compassion, which is an important step on the path to healing. The energy of Reiki can be felt immediately as a warm, tingling sensation that frequently makes a person feel light and radiant. It may also feel like a pulsing, like the heartbeat of the universe, and it may seem to run in a circuit from energy center to energy center. Our feet are the way we keep in touch with the earth, our crown is the part of us that always faces up to the universe above, and our hands are the way we touch other people. They are how we connect when we greet each other, when we do our work, when we touch each other in a caring way. Love energy is warm. Healing is warm. Love gives us strength and courage to do what we need to do for self healing.

This is how Reiki feels, and how it works, at least in my experience. Our heart chakra (energy center) is in the center of our being, and it radiates out to all those other energy centers above and below. The heart centered energy connection is the key for both the healer and the one coming to the healer. When this intention is clear, something beneficial always results. This is my experience of it, and why I feel that it really works.

Silence and Reiki

One of the things I like best about Reiki is that it does not require any talking or explanation in order to work. We just need to be present and let the healing energy flow through us. It is very elegant the way we can just put on a CD of some wonderful music, channel energy for the client, and then by the time the music is over, we are done with our treatment.

Sometimes we may feel inspired to say something, but that it very much in the moment.

Reiki is very much about being in the moment. What a wonderful modality. When I channel Reiki for other people, I always enjoy the feeling too. The residual effect is sweet for both of us. Speaking sometimes breaks the spell.
