Some of Us Are Slow Learners

If you sometimes feel like you are a slow learner, don't be disappointed. Why do you think that we are given more than one lifetime to get the important lessons?

Lessons can look different if we regard them as totally new, but when we look through a longer perspective we see the patterns and that helps us get clarity and recognize where we are at a faster pace and see the things that we repeat.

In this way, past life recall can accelerate our movement forward, ironic as that may seem.

As we review stories from our past, we are offered the opportunity to recognize how or why we may have chosen the work we have in this lifetime, our lovers and spouses in this lifetime. Viewing past life stories can also explain aspects of difficult family relationships.

Remember, however, that we always have free will, so we can choose to be stubborn and not learn lessons as well as the possibility of learning them faster.

Nobody said we had to be fast learners.

Reincarnation and Animals

Cats, dogs and other animals who share our lives are there for a reason, same as people are in our lives for a reason. Sometimes they reincarnate with us, and one cat or one dog can be a reincarnation of another we have had in our lives.

Grieving for an animal that dies is the same process as grieving for a person who dies. They share experiences in our life with us, just like people do. And they share love with us, just like people do. Sometimes they are even better at it because they don't really think about what happened last month, last year, yesterday or whatever. They are really great teachers about staying in the moment.

When we lose an animal that we shared part of our life with, there are lessons that have been offered to us, even though they came through a dog or cat, rather than a person.

Some people believe that people get reincarnated as animals, but I have seen animals that remind me to a great degree of other animals I have known.

We may lose an animal suddenly through an accident, or through a long, lingering illness. The grieving is still necessary, and we send our love with it into the next world, however that looks. You never know when you might see them again. Some people may doubt that animals have the possibility of reincarnation, but they have a spirit that animates them too, and the intelligence and the love have to come from somewhere.

I don't know how else to account for the similarities in personality between certain cats and dogs I have known. You may have had a similar experience as well. This is one of those things that we may not be able to prove, but we can feel.

How Can a Past Life Recall Help You Now?

After a relationship is over, we may find ourselves wondering why we ever got into that one in the first place. When we are still going through the pain of separation and moving, we may be unable to see clearly, so it is sometimes easier to review after some time has passed (but not always, some are ready to do it right away) but there are lessons to draw from every experience. We just may have a difficult time figuring out what that is, and having a neutral guide can be valuable in this effort.

During this season of big parties and family reunions, questions about the nature of our relationships may be on our minds as we reflect on our past and look forward to our future.

A past life recall session is uniquely able to help you get answers to these questions. A past life recall is different than a reading. In a recall, I help you remember your own stories. I do not tell you what they were.

Recalling past lives can be a valuable experience, because it can help you get answers to your questions. For many people, this allows them the proper perspective to see the patterns in their life.

It can be a tool to help you learn something from a past life that can explain how you feel about yourself in this lifetime.

It can also help you discover a hidden talent or ability that is revealed through a past life.

It can help you discover the origin of unexplained pains, fears or phobias in this lifetime, and possibly find some relief from it.

It can help point the way to resolve old karma.

Past lives can hold the key to certain dreams you have had or are currently having. There are patterns in our dreams, just like there are patterns in our past lives and patterns in our relationships.

Past life information can be helpful for writing, research and creative inspiration.

Recalling these stories can be fun, without any other specific reason except to have an interesting and positive experience.

The first time I ever had a past life session, I asked the person who was guiding me through it how I could tell if it was just something my imagination made up. She said "If you just go through this process with me and you come up with a story that teaches you a valuable lesson, or helps you in some way, does it matter where the story came from?"

Knowing our patterns by reflecting on our past can help us create a better future, and that certainly is worthwhile, isn't it?

Bodies of Water

Swimming is a return to our natural state in a most primal way. We are suspened in water for nine months prior to birth. Some women, seeking a natural way to help ease their children into the world, give birth in water.

When we are stressed, swimming is a great way to relax, stretching out our bodies again and introducing fluid movement to undo the constrictive nature of sitting at a desk. After an hour of swimming, we have returned to a primal state of relaxation, where we are a body of water suspended in a body of water. We are relaxed.

Why do you think that so many people take their vacations and holidays by the beach? Whether it is ocean, lake, or river, these are destinations of choice. Water calls to us by nature, and we return again and again, seeking solace and healing.

Water reconditions our state of fluidity. We reconnect with our natural state of motion. It is also the way we express emotion. When we feel strongly, water flows to facilitate our feelings and we see visible signs of expression in laughter, tears, sweat, excitement, fear, orgasm, nervousness, sorrow and joy. It is all there, written in our water.

We are bodies of water, on a planet of mostly water. Our bones are the land where the water meets an organizing influence of solidity. Where the water meets the shore is the place we find our transition. We transition from work to play. Our skeleton is the rallying point around which our water ebbs and flows. It can form a stabilizing influence, a frame for the water to swirl around.

Our spirits thrive on moving water. They respond to the cycles of the moon, our moods massaged into varying states of being. Spirit moves through us, signaling us with instinctive flows in our bodies, producing feelings that guide us into action.

When we flow with another person, our waters dance and mingle, joining us in a way that makes our boundaries feel soft, our separation disappear. When we are close and moving together, the rhythm of our ebb and flow is a tide of its own set in motion, coming to rest only when the water has covered the low ground, and high tide has created a new shoreline. And it reaches a peaceful state and settles there for a while before receding to low ground and the old shoreline, but inevitably it seeks to join in that motion of swelling and rising again, the hunger for high tide being part of its nature. Water seeks to move, like we seek to move to find those high and low places along our shorelines, to rise and fall, to swim with together, water with water.

We are bodies of water, moving in water, water within water, taste upon taste, lapping at our shorelines, moving in a rhythm of life that will never stop, can never stop. Even in death, many ancient people pictured our spirits returning to swim across great bodies of water to whatever is next. Or they pictured our spirits rejoining the great ocean of spirits and swimming together before reemerging as another body, another life. Dreams, ideas, inspirations come to us in water for this reason. We reconnect with our nature. We free the boundaries and let intuition come.

We are bodies of water, swimming in water, swimming in spirits, swimming in bodies, swimming in emotions, swimming with each other, swimming alone. We are always swimming, experiencing high and low tides, exploring the fluid space in our dreams, our consciousness, our feelings, our touches, our movements, reminding us that being fluid is our natural state. Bodies with bodies, bodies suspended, belief suspended, emotions engaged, we are bodies of water within bodies of water, with bodies of water, on a planet of water.

It is our essence, our presence, our natural state. Bodies of water, with bodies of water, on bodies of water, in bodies of water, flowing, flowing, flowing.

Underworld Journeys

Every year at this time, around the Fall Equinox, another popular story about the underworld is that of Persephone, Hades and Demeter from Greek mythology.

One version of the story is that Persephone was a beautiful young maiden in the full flowering of her youth, beauty and fertility. Hades desires her, lusts after her, and one day while she is out wandering through a field picking flowers with some nymphs, he kidnaps her and takes her to the underworld with him. In this version, Demeter is distressed and outraged that Persephone has been taken by Hades.

In another version of the story, she is ready for the transition from girl to woman and desires Hades as her first sexual partner. She willingly goes with him to the underworld to explore the excitement of her newfound sexuality. In this version, Demeter does not want to let go of her daughter because she is not ready for her little girl to grow up.

In both versions, her mother, Demeter, the goddess of grains, demands her return. In one version, in retaliation, she withholds rain and the fruits of the harvest. In another version, she is so busy looking for Persephone that she forgets to nourish the crops. The distressed people who were deprived of their harvest implored Zeus, the leader of the gods, to intervene.

In both versions, Persephone eats seeds of the pomegranate, so when Zeus asks to have Persephone return above ground, Hades responds that Persephone had broken the rule decreed by the Fates that by eating or drinking in the underworld, she was bound to it.

Zeus, trying to bring peace, negotiates a settlement. Persephone will spend part of every year above ground, from the time of the Spring Equinox, when the planting is done, until the Fall Equinox, when the harvest comes. In between then, she goes back into the underworld with Hades. Thus, the significance of the turning of the seasons on the days when day and night are in equal balance.

In this story, the underworld journey signifies a necessary initiation for the person, where coming to grips with the unseen elements of growth, the interior excitement and evolution and indulging the taste for the hidden or forbidden fruits, are necessary for the awakening of the adult aspects of the person. Once a person has tasted these, they can never return to their previous consciousness.

A similar story, that of Ishtar and Tammuz from the Babylonian mythology contains a similar but different lesson, still with the transformation taking place in the underworld.

Yesterday's stories, about Robert Johnson and Tulough O'Carolan, also revolve around transformations through time spent in the underworld, as does the story of Thomas the Rhymer who may have been the inspiration for the Scottish story Tam Lin.

In each of these stories of underworld journeys, the person undergoing the journey comes back with some gift, or power that comes from venturing into the unknown, undergoing a trial and returning. Perhaps these stories are meant to encourage us to take these adventures when we are ready for our next stage of life, our next level of evolution.

The underworld may be scary to some precisely because it contains truths that are glossed over when we only skim the surface. There is a beauty and a power that comes in obvious forms and easily appealing appearances. And then there is another layer of beauty and power that comes from mining the powerful unseen currents of energy and insight that lie below the surface. The underworld adds complexity and subtlety and rewards us with insights that open our visions and enable us to access veins of talent that we did not know how to access before.

In the mythologies, the underworld is a place for the dead, and it is also a place for rebirth. Each time we evolve to a new level, our old self dies. And so our underworld journey continues.

Questions About Past Lives

One of the questions that prompted me to inquire about past lives is this. Why are some of us born healthy while others of us are born with various physical conditions that require surgery to correct? Why do some of us have a fear of small places, or heights, or deep water or crowds which has no rational or logical explanation in any life experience?

Yes, a person could say that it is simply genetics or an inherited trait, but where would that originate? People certainly are born with conditions that run in families like diabetes or heart conditions. But not everyone in a family is born with a fear of heights or a fear of water.

It is interesting that in my own case, I was born with one leg not properly formed and it took many surgeries to correct. They did a great job with the surgeries and I have been able to get around just fine.Still, doctors advised me not to play contact sports like football because they were afraid I might break it and that they would not be able to get it set properly again. So one past life revealed that I was a great athlete in a previous life, but that in this life, I was born with an unmistakable sign that this lifetime was not to be about being a great athlete. Another aspect of that life is that I had visions that I wanted to express but was never taught to read and write. I also had other lifetimes where my ability to write was a pivotal part of the story. I have always wondered why writing came so easily to me. For a good part of my adult life, I made my living as a writer, editor and writing teacher. Today I write on this blog.

Sometimes another person's story will reveal that their fear of water might have been as a result of drowning in a past life. Or a pain in a certain part of their body is related to a severe or fatal injury in that part of the body in another life.

Or a certain relationship pattern reflects patterns present in other lives. When we notice that we keep repeating a certain pattern, we have an opportunity to change it. Perhaps we never even realized we had a pattern until we recalled some stories and noticed the similarities.

That is why sometimes we feel like we know someone, even when we have just met them. They say that we reincarnate in groups, so that is why when a person is recalling a past life story, they feel that the person in one story reminds them of someone they know in their present life. Perhaps they do not look the same, but their energy, characteristics and manner are clearly recognizable.

Brian Weiss and other well known authors on the subject of past lives offer many examples in their books of how many people found release from fears, pains and anxieties after stories were recalled. Sometimes it is simply peace and freedom from anxiety that are found. Sometimes it was relief from a recurring pain, and sometimes it was just the ability to relax and be able to sleep through the night.

In my own case, it was the doctors who reconstructed my leg, but knowing that there was some reason, or at least a plausible story from my past, that explains why I was born with that physical challenge plus an ability to write that helped confirm for me that I am on the right track and that using my available energies in the way that I do fits a larger picture and confirms the pattern already working in my current life.

Past Life Resonance

I know that many people are skeptical about past lives, so let me present it to you the way it was presented to me, and this may open it to a different perspective.

The first time I ever went to someone to experience a past life session, I asked her this. "I have a good imagination, so how do I know if I ever had a past life or if I am just making things up?"

She said "If you go through this process with me and you come up with a story that teaches you something valuable, does it matter how you got the story?"

That is a lesson that has stuck with me, because the past life stories I recalled made sense to me and helped me recognize the patterns in my life. Recalling past lives did not change what I had done in this lifetime, but it helped me make sense of it. The patterns from the stories echoed real life events from this lifetime.

When a person recalls their own past life stories, they see patterns in relationships, patterns in life, perhaps uncover roots of fears or pains. Then once those roots are uncovered, some of the pain associated with them seems to dissipate.

Some of my own stories surprised me, some did not, but all were useful and helpful in understanding the life I have now. There are, no doubt, stories I have not yet remembered, but when the time is right, I will. Our stories are uniquely ours, and it is amazing how our experiences can be felt when we remember them and how cathartic it can be when we recognize our patterns. And that empowers us and frees us. Our past does influence our present. Our free will determines the course of action we choose from here.

From the Past Into the Future

One of the greatest misconceptions about past life recall is that it is nothing more than a frivolity or a vanity.

But those are the opinions of people who have never experienced a session and witnessed the benefits.

When I went to have my first past life session, I was skeptical, but curious, so I asked the person doing my session how I could tell whether whatever I came up with is simply a product of my imagination. She answered this way. "If you go through this process with me and you come up with a story, and that story is helpful to you and teaches you a valuable lesson, does it matter where the story came from?"

By staying neutral and helping the person recall their own stories, the guide helps a person identify patterns in their relationships, patterns to the events in their lives. Seeing this common thread then, frees them up from repeating the same pattern in their present live. By prompting them to recognize the identity of a person from a past life, they can recognize the dynamics between themselves and a similar person in their present life.

When a person recognizes these patterns, they are empowered to make changes. Clarity becomes their ally. People who have experienced fears or pains in their present life, upon recognizing the origin of that in a past life, can release that pain or fear once they examine the root. Even if it is not only partially alleviated, at least that is progress and that can continue to improve over time.

Past life stories can be very helpful to a person as a tool for finding greater joy and satisfaction in their present life. Far from being vain or frivolous, it is a way of healing that really works.

Walk In, Walk Out

Like many other people, I am curious about subjects that have to do with ETs, UFOs, ghosts and so on. These aspects of life on the edges of consciousness are fascinating. Last night, I went to hear a speaker who claimed to be a "walk-in." Walk-ins are people whose bodies are inhabited by an ET. The soul or energetic body of an ET simply walks into the human body. She made an interesting comment. She said that many people who are walk-ins were misdiagnosed in the past as multiple personality disorders or bipolar. She said that when the soul of a human who wants to leave makes an agreement with an ET, one soul leaves and the other comes in.

Whether this is true or not, or whether it works this way or not, this concept is fascinating. No doubt, many people will dismiss such a theory as "way out there."

But consider this. Many people have a life which is not happy. They are not fulfilled by what they do. There are those who have had abusive childhoods or abusive marriages or other extremely disfunctional relationships. If they have no hope, and see no way in which their life will get better, their mind can go in some unusual directions. If a person decides to check out of ordinary consciousness, modern pharmacology offers some amazing drugs to let a person who has gone bonkers come to work and function, although other aspects of life are way out of whack. It is not so far fetched from the Philip K. Dick novel which was made into a movie about how people in a science fiction future would go and get a "treatment" that let them think they had been on vacation, when in fact they had not. They could have the feelings and memories of being on vacation while they still went to work. Wonder drugs, yes. Prozac? Lithium? Ritalin? These things are not exactly that, but they do alter behavior and change thinking patterns.

I believe, for example, that what many people now call multi-tasking is not a good thing. On my day job, for example, our managers insist that we can have more than one task be our number one priority at the same time. We work on dual screens, working on problems sent in by email while simultaneously taking calls from customers. Of course, they are wrong. A person can only focus on one task at a time and do it well. You cannot have more than one thing be the number one priority at the same time.

They also offer a shift of four 10 hour days a week, with starting times at 5 or 6 in the morning, which of course, would mean that a person would have to go to bed about 8 pm in order to get enough sleep to get up at 4 am. And that, of course, would interfere with having a life. I mean, when you get into that kind of rhythm, you won't have much time for socializing in the evenings. You wouldn't be able to go out and hear a speaker, see a play, go to a concert, or go out after work for dinner and drinks and conversation with your friends. Oh yes, and they did away with those pesky paid holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, July 4, Memorial Day and Labor Day. So all days are the same. You can just come in and do the same old grind without any extra pay while your family and friends are all getting together. Your life will be about going to work and sleeping. Yes, you will have a three day weekend, but your body clock will be reset to go to bed at 8 pm and get up at 4 am. What else would that do to a person's mental state? Road rage is one of the minor social aberrations that come from people venting inappropriately from being expected to do more work for less pay and having to drive in congested roads just to get to and from there. We are seeing what happens when such expectations become the norm.

Whether or not you think the whole walk-in concept is true or not, it poses fascinating questions about human development and evolution.

Powerful Essences from Dreams

Movies can convey a powerful impression on us that stir the emotions and tell great stories within a very compact amount of time. Images stay with us for a long time and make a deep impression. That is why sometimes we can recall a great movie we saw years ago, but forget things we have done in the years between then and now.

Storytelling is powerful, and combined with sounds and images, the magic of storytelling is amplified.

How many inspiring moments come to us this way? Yet, all of this is not to discount reading and personal storytelling. Those have been important in my life as they have been to people for generations and millennia.

At its heart all movie making is really just storytelling with all the modern equipment being able to do create worlds of illusion and illumination with a sense of immediacy.

Movies constantly involve metaphysical processes and philosophies. Concepts like karma past lives, ghosts, spirits, apprenticeship, wisdom, heart and soul are all there in popular movies, whether or not they are openly discussed in the dialogue. Have you noticed that? Some of the movies with a lot of this going on are not some of the ones that tout it up front. In the illusory world of movies, we often engage in consciousness raising realizations. From these dreams come powerful essences.

Recognizing Each Other

Why is it that sometimes we sense deep connections with other people quickly? In some instances, it could be a past life connection, and in other instances, it might simply be a recognition of a kindred spirit.

How deep do these connections go? So much of it depends on our free will that it varies with every person. There may be times when we choose to open up to a relationship and other times when we do not.

Deja vu usually refers to the kind of recall we get when something from a past life strikes a familiar chord with us, but I believe that this feeling can come from a familiar person or situation within this lifetime. There may be a person who appears in our life at this point in time who reminds us of someone we knew earlier.

As with all such occurences, this represents an opportunity to handle our decisions differently this time, and learn from our experiences.

Pan Dancing All Over the Place

If you think that my idea that maybe the goal of spirits is to come to Earth is backwards, consider this. Why is the US the number one destination on this planet? Why do more immigrants and refugees want to come here than any other place on the planet?

Obviously, the opportunity to live crammed in an apartment or house with several other people, eating beans and rice every day is a step up from wherever they were. The water out of the tap tastes better than a lot of the water they had access to on the way here. Even in an apartment with little privacy and only the cheapest, most monotonous diet, they also have running water, electricity, a telephone, radio, TV, heat and air conditioning or at least fans.

When they go to the store, they are amazed at the variety of choices they have in all kinds of products. Compared to a life of hard work, near starvation and living in a hut, the taste of life here is paradise.

If it is that way here, why not in the cycle of rebirth?

Can you imagine that a spirit might desire an opportunity to feel what it is like to kiss, taste a nice piece of meat right off the BBQ with a glass of wine, the feel of dancing with a person in their arms, or taking a walk in the forest and drinking a cold glass of water at the trail's end?

In the same way that an immigrant would feel like it is a great experience to live in an apartment which might might be meager by our standards, but regal by theirs, perhaps a spirit might long for the pleasure of physical sensations after being disembodied.

Maybe even the opportunity to face tragedy and sadness is a uniquely human experience. We have opportunities to make our own lives better and help others. Feeling, in and of itself, might be a thing that pure spirits are incapable of.

If all potential lies within us, and if our thoughts can create things, then we are capable of creating our heaven right here on Earth. Life is what you make it. Maybe it is not better to be floating around up there somewhere. If going beyond is the big prize, why do we keep coming back here?

Maybe that whole thing of getting our rewards in the great beyond is merely a ruse to misdirect our attention again. What would you do differently if you acted as if we are in a place where we have the ability to make changes and enjoy life? What if we chose in each minute to do those things which would make this more of a paradise? Then our rewards would not have to wait until the great unknown.

Pan Dancing

Perhaps we are on Earth for a vacation from the body-less realms. This is the only way we get an experience of this place, and experiece of living in a body. We learn to manage and do things in the dense physical reality that distinguishes us from the world of spirit, where everything is ethereal, light and airy.

What if this is our paradise? What if the most delightful place that we will ever know is right here? Maybe some of those ideas we got about paradise being up there somewere up there are all wrong. What if our whole understanding of this process of life, death and rebirth are all wrong? What if our understanding is all upside down?

Picture this. When you are out there somewhere, no more substantial than a breeze blowing across the plains, when your sense of yourself is intangible an undefinable at best, you are finally rewarded with an opportunity to be given a body and come here to experience what it is like to eat, drink, sleep, dream, have sex, work, play, dance and sing.

So when we die we go back to this in between zone where it is just misty and cloudy and we float around without any substance. Then we get reincarnated in these bodies to experience life again, savoring the experience and learning from our past mistakes.

Maybe the goal is not to go up there, but come back here.

Chip Coffey's Paranormal State

One evening recently, we were scanning through the On Demand section of the cable service and spotted a listing for a show called Paranormal States. Just out of curiosity, we decided to watch an episode to see what it was like.

As they were going to this house to investigate a case of spirit possession, the narrator mentioned that they were being joined by Chip Coffey, and my ears immediately perked up because I used to know someone by that name. Then he entered the scene, and sure enough, it is the person I used to know.

Chip is a psychic and medium who specializes in communicating with the spirits of the dead, and apparently he is getting quite famous and popular these days. I like Chip because he is a nice guy, with a quick sense of humor and was always helpful. Back when I knew him, I was the editor of a metaphysical magazine, and he was one of my regular contributing writers. He was a good writer, and he possessed one of those other qualities that is highly prized among editors - he always got his work in on time.

Even many years ago, long before there was a TV show called Paranormal States, Chip was making a full time living as a psychic, so it is not a real surprise to see him being even more successful now. Still it was kind of a reality check to see someone I knew on TV. I mean, how often does it happen that you turn on the TV and suddenly, one of the main characters is someone you know.

Of course it is another kind of reality to make a full time living out of talking to dead people. One person's reality is another person's weirdness. The episodes we have seen include not only spirits of dead people, but also UFOs and unknown creatures, in other words, a range of possible entities that are being investigated and actions taken to remedy negative influences from any of these. Some of the entities and phenomena are simply curious and unexplained.

Life is a strange journey, and we never know if we will be surprised at who we meet or how or when we meet them. I am glad for my friend's success. In a way it is also encouraging because as we work to make our way in this world, we do not always know in what way the success will present itself.

Reality checks can come in strange packages. People who live in haunted houses have one version of reality check. Then comes another reality check in the form of people who want to help them deal with the haunted house, and instead of running from it, they head straight towards it. Guess it all depends on what you consider reality.

The Pleasure of Your Own Perfume

Have you ever thought of making your own perfumes? It is not as hard as you think. Everyone likes things that smell good, and our tastes in what smells good are very individual.

I got started making my own oils and aftershaves because the manufacturers quit making some of my favorites. I tried other flavors, but they can get pretty expensive and if you do not get lots of compliments on them and are not entirely happy with them, it can be an expensive experiment.

The essential secret to making your own oil is simple. You start with a simple carrier like jojoba or almond oil. These do not have much of a scent of their own, and that is what you want, something neutral to start. Then you need something with a bass note, something heavy, but just a little bit of it. Then you add something in the midrange, and finally a top note, something lighter, brighter to round it out.

For aftershave, I use a base of witch hazel. It's great for the skin. It is one of the things that they used in old time barber shops after they shaved you. When I was a kid, they still had those kinds of barber shops where you could get a shave and a haircut (although I was too young to shave at the time).

Anyway, follow the same formula for adding the scent you want. Witch hazel does have a scent of its own, and I like it. Generally the scent I will add to it has the same elements as what I use for a perfume oil.

It is satisfying when people compliment me and ask what I am wearing. They are usually surprised when I tell them that I make it myself. You also have the added factor that it is very economical to blend your own. Bottles of essential oil can be purchased at any health food store or herb shop and even though a little bottle can cost a good bit, they will last quite a while and make quite a few batches.

Use whatever flavors you find appealing. I find it very joyful to experiment with different scents to see which combinations really work well together. Even if you somehow made a mistake and make a batch that you didn't like, you can just throw it away and start over and you still are way ahead of the cost of buying already made perfumes and aftershaves.

The other thing is that they are more natural. There is nothing in my oils except the oils. I never worry about them spoiling because I make small batches and use them up within a couple months and then make a new batch. When you look at the ingredients on most commercially manufactured perfumes, there usually is a long list of things you can't pronounce. Making your own is simple, natural and the end result can be exactly how you like it.

How Past Lives Affect Present Life

Many people are intrigued by the concept of past lives, while others think it is a foolish waste of time. The books of Brian Weiss, M.D. are an excellent resource on this topic. He himself was trained in Yale Medical School and raised in a religion that did not have reincarnation as one of its tenets. It was through working with clients that he discovered that when they recalled past lives that their problems would be relieved. It seems to be that the root cause, once reviewed, allows the person to see how a certain pain or phobia came to manifest in this lifetime. Then once those stories were recalled, they seemed to help release the energy connected to that problem with the psychic burden lifted, physical healing could also ensue. Of course, no one is saying that all physical problems have a psychic cause. Some problems are simply physical and respond to surgery and medicine.

Dr. Weiss began as a skeptic, and used traditional methods of talk therapy and psychotropic drugs to try and help his breakthrough patient get relief for her problems. Finally, after failing to make progress with any other technique, he tried hypnosis and suddenly she was recalling past lives. Suddenly, she was also showing signs of improvement.

Another way of understanding this concept is in reference to a technique called reframing. In other words, when we take a look at a problem from a different point of view, it is possible to get a different answer. If we like the concept of parallel universes and simultaneous lifetimes, this would be one way to explain why it works.Another would be that even within the context of a single lifetime, looking at the problem from a whole different story perspective allows us to experience it differently.

Sometimes people have an easier time recognizing the important points in a story when it is contained within another narrative. Think of the parallels. A person has a few marriages or a few career changes in this lifetime, but they don't see the pattern to it all. Then they relax and recall some stories of a farmer and his wife, or the troubadour and his lady or the hunter and the hunted or the noble and their servants. Being a step removed from the story can add clarity. In some cases, past life recall may cause you to want to do something different with this life. In other cases, it can be helpful in confirming the path we are already on. In my own case, I had a medical problem at birth. I always wondered why. Later on, I also discovered that certain abilities came to me naturally. And I wondered why this was so.

A past life story answered these questions for me. That did not make me do anything differently, but it gave me satisfaction to see that there was some sense to my circumstance. This experience strengthened my resolve to continue doing the things I have been doing, so it was useful in that sense.

Past lives can be useful in our present life. And who doesn't like a good story, especially one that you are in yourself?

Our Soul's Migration

You could describe our journey into sleep every night as our soul's migration into another realm. It journeys into a landscape of a parallel level of time space and brings us back images or vignettes of that journey.

We can see our dream states as a time when other communications come to us, but they could also be when we venture out to them. In other words, do we travel to our dreams or do our dreams travel to us?

Perhaps our journey from this life to an afterlife can also been seen as a migration, when our soul leaves our body and travels from this reality to another one.

We can see our reincarnations as a soul journey from one time to another on this same planet, and there are those who think that perhaps souls migrate between planets.

I can't say for sure how it all works. Probably none of us will know until we make the journey ourselves.

Ancient people used to see signs and divine messages from the migrations of birds and their patterns in flight. Yes, there are the unmistakable weather patterns that they foretell, and perhaps the ancients were right. Perhaps there is more.

The birds may be a reflection of our own journeys through life, the difference being that our flights are unlimited.

Why Care About Life After Death?

One of the enduring mysteries of life is death. Why is it that we care about what happens after we die? Is it that the thought of just a short span on Earth is not enough for us? That we hunger for life so much that we want it to continue even if we have to imagine some other form for it to continue in?

Is it that we would like to have an opportunity to have a better life next time around? Is it that we would rather be someone else? Is it that we want to feel that life is fair and that there is justice and that somehow the good will be rewarded and the bad will be punished?

Concerns about what happens after death is a central concern of many religions. Everyone wants to have a happy ending in some beautiful garden.

How does that influence our behavior in this lifetime? Does it inspire us to act more lovingly, compassionately and kindly while we are here? In some cases, yes. In some cases, no.

Do we care because we feel a need to make sense out of the fact that some people die as children before they really have a chance to live much? Or we try to make sense of the fact that some people who are brilliant and created remarkable things died before they reached even greater levels of achievement.

What would be different, what would we do different, if we knew for sure that we only had one life, this life on Earth, and that when it was over, there was no further life for us?

The only real reports we have ever had from beyond death are the reports of near death experiences. Those people relate tales of traveling through a tunnel of light and being greeted by friends and relatives who have already crossed over. Of course, we don't get much beyond that because all those authors returned.

Do we keep reincarnating until we learn the important life lessons? Or do we just get one life and then get judged and sent to some permanent residence elsewhere? Why do we keep making up all these stories?
